Quality gardening and landscaping products
Birch Airfield Composting Services manufacture and supply a number of compost products that can be used by both the amateur gardener and professional landscaper. All of our compost products conform to both BSI PAS 100:2018 and the Compost Quality Protocol.
Our finest grade compost product is our 0-10mm Soil Improver, which can be used as either a soil improver, mulch or even as a lawn dressing. It supplies the soil with valuable organic matter that helps release nutrients to plants and suppresses soil borne diseases.
The 0-10mm Soil Improver can be used on bare planting areas and vegetable patches; on established planting areas, borders and around trees; and can even be used as a lawn dressing (for best results, apply in the autumn or early spring).

This is our finest grade compost product that can be used as either a soil improver, mulch or even as a lawn dressing. It supplies the soil with valuable organic matter that helps release nutrients to plants and suppresses soil borne diseases. Our soil improver should not be used as potting compost on its own and should always be blended with good quality topsoil at a ratio of at least 1 part soil improver to 1 part topsoil. It has a neutral to alkaline pH that makes it less suitable for ericaceous species such as rhododendron, azalea, Pieris, and heathers.
For best results as a soil improver on bare planting areas and vegetable patches apply about 100mm (4”) of soil improver on the planting area and dig into the soil to a depth of 300mm (12”).
On established planting areas, borders and around trees spread 100mm (4”) around the plants and allow nature to take its course. This is a great thing to do in the spring as the soil improver will initially act as a mulch suppressing weeds, holding moisture in the soil and protecting plants/emerging herbaceous species from late frosts. Over time the worms and other macro fauna will carry the compost into the soil increasing organic matter and supplying plants with a balanced slow release of nutrients.
Our soil improver can also be used as a lawn dressing and for best results should be applied in the autumn or early spring. Simply scarify or rake out any thatch from the lawn, then use a hollow tine or fork to aerate the lawn. Grass seed to match the existing grass species should then be applied as per the suppliers recommendations. Finally apply the 0-10mm soil improver and brush in to a depth of 10mm (3/8”).
